As you may have heard me say previously, I’m planning a return to the world of AUTUMN next year with two new novels. My aim is that one, if not both of them will be released around October 2020 – the 10 year anniversary of the mass-market release of the first book through St Martin’s Press. There’s a lot of work to be done yet, though, so don’t hold me to that release date. You know how reliable I am with deadlines…
In readiness for the new books I’m planning a number of initiatives to raise the profile of the original novels again, and the first part of that project is now complete. Last week saw the Infected Books re-release of the German language editions of the novels, originally published by Michael Krug of Otherworldverlag. Here are the new editions. I’m very happy with how they’ve turned out.
Thanks to those of you who’ve already pre-ordered THE LAST BIG THING. I’m humbled by the number of folks who’ve picked up a copy, and I’m anxiously/nervously looking forward to hearing what you think. Don’t forget – if you’ve pre-ordered a signed copy from Infected Books, you can download a complementary ebook version straightaway and get reading immediately.
I’ve mentioned the art that Craig Paton put together for the book. As you’d expect with a collection like this, the cover is a grouping together of a number of disparate ideas. One of the new stories is about a band, and that’s where the initial idea for the artwork came from: a faded and torn tour poster that’s been pasted to a wall. Craig had a lot of fun adding loads of Easter eggs and in-jokes to the rest of the wall which I’m sure you’ll appreciate once you’ve read the collection. If you’re reading this piece on my website, you should be able to see a small sample immediately to your right.
I’ve been wanting to release this book for quite some time as I’ve built up a stockpile of short stories and it’s often the case that years after publication they can sometimes prove difficult for people to find. As you’d expect, there’s a certain amount of my trademark Moody bleakness in there with apocalyptic stories like THE LUCKY ONES, but it’s not all about the end of the world (for once). Once I looked back at the finished collection, I realised just to what extent some of my biggest influences have shaped much of what I’ve written over the years. My love of 1950s B movies and obscure 1970s horror films comes to the fore in stories like BIG MAN and ALMOST FOREVER, whereas OSTRICH, THE DEAL and NOLAN HIGGS IS OUT OF HIS DEPTH wouldn’t be out of place as episodes of TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED or THE TWILIGHT ZONE (aka the greatest TV show in history).
THE LAST BIG THING also marks the first time that my one and (currently) only HATER short story – EVERYTHING AND NOTHING – has appeared in print. It’s an interesting little off-cut which takes place in the days running up to the events of DOG BLOOD and which features a certain Danny McCoyne taking a break from the fighting and realising how close he is to home…
The book will ship by 8 January (if not sooner), and all pre-orders will be personally signed. I’d definitely recommend the print version – you’ll be able to fully appreciate the brilliant, easter-egg filled cover art by Craig Paton. As with all Infected Books titles purchased directly through theInfected Books website, you’re able to download and read the ebook version immediately once your order has been placed.
And just to tempt you a little bit more… three lucky pre-orders placed before 8 January will also receive an advance copy of ALL ROADS END HERE. Here I go again spreading more Christmas and New Year cheer (actually, it’s more like New Year gloom – ALL ROADS is a heck of a brutal book).
THE LAST BIG THING is officially released on 8 January, and will be available from all the usual places. Ebook versions will also be available from most retailers – at the time of writing this post, only Amazon is live.
We sit in our own little bubbles, watching the rest of the world go by. We think ‘it’ll never happen to me’ but guess what? At some point it probably will. We might think we’re in control but believe me, there’s a lot we don’t know.
In the spirit of The Twilight Zone and Tales of the Unexpected, cult author David Moody presents eleven stories about life, death and everything in between (and after).
From the never-ending nightmare of domestic bliss to the search for the ultimate body modification, from warring families to warring nations, from the last minutes before doomsday to the polluted shores of the post-post-apocalypse, THE LAST BIG THING highlights how thin the line between the ordinary and extraordinary can be.
Rule of thumb: whenever I quote a deadline, add on at least a month. Slightly later than planned, but here’s the cover for THE LAST BIG THING – a collection featuring my favourite shorts of the last ten years or so (plus a few brand new ones). The book will be available as a hardback and ebook from 8 January.
Pre-orders will open on Wednesday 26 December.
Featuring the following stories:
THE LUCKY ONES
WE WERE SO YOUNG ONCE (new)
NOLAN HIGGS IS OUT OF HIS DEPTH
AWAY WITH THE FAIRIES (new)
EVERYTHING AND NOTHING: a HATER story (first time in print)
Heads up: pre-orders will shortly be opening for THE LAST BIG THING – a collection of my favourite (generally non-zombie) short stories from the last 10 years. This is something I’ve wanted to do for quite a while, but the timing has never been right. In the next couple of weeks I’ll tell you more about the contents. There are eight reprints, many of which are from old and/or hard to find collections, and three new stories. The new tales are shorts I’ve had planned or half-written for a while but which have, until now, never found the right home.
THE LAST BIG THING will be released through Infected Books in early December. It’ll be a hardback and ebook release, with a multi-narrator audiobook version to follow in 2019. And the cover art? Christ, it’s beautiful. Longtime collaborator CRAIG PATON has produced something special, and I’ll be revealing it in the coming weeks.
The German language edition of STRAIGHT TO YOU (my debut novel – written in 1994, published in 1996, re-written and re-published in 2014) is now available from my fine friends at Voodoo Press. You can find more information here. Special thanks to Craig Paton for revising his original cover design for the new release.
The German language edition of TRUST is released today by Voodoo Press. TRUST is a book I’m very proud of. It’s different from most of my other stuff, and it was the first of my pre-HATER Infected Books novels to be rewritten and re-released. There’s been movie interest in the novel from time to time and I think of all my books not under option, it’s the story I’d most like to see on screen. It deliberately goes against all the typical alien contact cliches, and I think original cover artist CRAIG PATON said it best when he called TRUST an anti-science-fiction novel.

In the past I’ve held several competitions where folks could win the chance to appear in forthcoming novels. Most notably, Keiran Cope won a charity auction to be in the final AUTUMN novel and have his own AUTUMN short story (which you can read here). And way, way back in 2008, The Swimmer was based on a lovely lady called Joanna Milne who won a contest to become a featured zombie in AUTUMN: DISINTEGRATION. Just below you can see Keiran in character (as immortalized by the mighty Craig Paton) and, next to him, The Swimmer (as sculpted by the equally mighty Patrick Crilley).
I think another contest is long overdue.
As you know I’m in the middle of writing the first part of a new four book horror/science-fiction series, THE SPACES BETWEEN. I’m offering FIVE people the chance to appear as characters in the books.
One randomly selected winner will:
Have a key character who appears in all four novels in the series named after them.
They’ll also receive a framed illustration of themselves depicted in a key scene from the first book.
And they’ll also get signed first editions of each book in the series as and when they’re released.
Four randomly selected runners-up will:
Have a supporting character named after them in one of the books (one book per winner).
They’ll also received signed first editions of each book in the series as and when they’re released.
Very few words are needed here. Once again I’ve been blown away by the talent of the mighty Craig Paton. Here’s the cover for the new edition of STRAIGHT TO YOU, out on 14 February from Infected Books (pre-order information below).
The book – both paperback and ebooks – will be appearing online at all the usual retailers over the next couple of weeks. You can, however, pre-order signed copies now from Infected Books. Pre-ordered copies will be posted out before the official release date and don’t forget: with any Infected Books title, if you buy the paperback you can claim a free ebook version and, likewise, if you buy the ebook you can claim a discount on the price of a signed paperback. There’s more information here.
