Hope to see you at the BIRMINGHAM HORROR CONVENTION at Edgbaston Stadium this Saturday. I’ll be there along with a host of horror luminaries, including stars of the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, FRIDAY THE 13th and HALLOWEEN movies, and some excellent author chums like ADAM NEVILL, MATT SHAW, PETER MCKEIRNON, ADAM MILLARD and many others. It promises to be an absolute cracker of an event. Tickets are still available – click here for more information.
Join me tomorrow for my annual pilgrimage to the Phoenix Arts Centre, Leicester, for the UK FESTIVAL OF ZOMBIE CULTURE. It’s always an absolute blast, and this year the movies showing are: NIGHT OF SOMETHING STRANGE, PLAN Z, TRAIN TO BUSAN (can’t wait for that one), ATTACK OF THE LEDERHOSEN ZOMBIES and PEELERS. Tickets are available direct from the Phoenix here.
Don’t forget, this weekend I’ll be a guest at HORROR EXPO IRELAND in Dublin. Tickets are going fast, so if you want to be there, you’d best get in quick. It’ll be well worth the price of admission, with twelve hours of horror lined up including panels, readings, screenings, and paranormal investigations. Find out more on Facebook and Twitter, and check out this article from PureM Zine. Hope to see some of you there.
I’ve got a few events coming up at the end of this year and I wanted to give you plenty of advance notice.
First off, on 30 October, I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be heading to the Freemasons Grand Lodge in Dublin where I’ll be guesting at HORROR EXPO IRELAND 2016. This sounds like a cracker: Running from 2pm to 2am Horror Expo Ireland promises an unforgettable and unique experience, which boasts a plethora of horror related events and activities ranging from panels, Q&A sessions, screenings, and paranormal investigations. While it is fair to say that this event is not your average convention, the organisers have provided a public platform which is entirely fan focused, as the audience is afforded an opportunity to critically engage with the genre of horror from a range perspectives alongside some of the industry’s most acknowledged experts.
Tickets are €40 and more information is available here. Follow the event on Facebook and Twitter.
The following weekend on 5 November I’ll be making a return to Lowestoft – spiritual home of the HATER series – for HORROR IN THE EAST 4. This year the event is based in the town library (which features in THEM OR US – thanks to David Naughton-Shires for the graphic below). If you need reminding why Lowestoft occupies such an important place in HATER folklore, then click here. More details will be announced shortly. It would be great if you could join us and spend the day deep in Hinchcliffe territory…
And on 12 November I’ll be heading to the Phoenix Centre in Leicester for the 10th UK FESTIVAL OF ZOMBIE CULTURE hosted by Zombie Ed (the brains behind Terror4Fun and the ZOMBIE TIMES). If you’ve not been to one of Ed’s undead events before, you’re in for a treat. Join the Facebook group here. Ticket details will be announced shortly.
Remember the huge Infected Books event I told you about recently? I need to let you know about a slight change of plan. It’s still on Friday 30 October at 7pm, it’s still going to be a cracking evening, we still want you to come in Halloween fancy dress if you’re up for it… we just need you to go to a different Waterstones store.
For those of you who know my home town of Birmingham, we have (for a short while longer) two large branches of Waterstones. We were originally scheduled to be in the High Street branch, but we’re relocating to the very beautiful New Street store instead, just a five minute walk away. This makes me happy: it’s an amazing building, and it’s where – three years ago this month – I got to interview one of my writing heroes, the legendary James Herbert (photographic evidence below). The store’s closing soon, so this is a great way to send it off in style.
As well as launching Wayne Simmons‘ new novel VOODOO CHILD and (hopefully) interviewing the book’s co-author Andre Duza via Skype, I’ll also be reading from the next HATER novel and talking a little about the upcoming movie.
We’ve space for over a hundred folks, but places are filling fast. If you’re intending on coming along, please send an email to the store (email@example.com) or tweet @WstonesNewSt to let us know you’re coming along.
It’s great to be able to confirm that Wayne Simmons and I will be flying the Infected Books flag at the Cardiff Independent Comic Expo next month. Kicking off at 10:00am at the Cardiff Masonic Hall, Guildford Street, the event is designed to showcase the very best in indie comics from South Wales and beyond (with a couple of dodgy-looking horror authors thrown into the mix). Guests include: Jasper Bark, Jason Cardy, Mike Collins, Ian Edginton, Patrick Goddard, Paul Grist, Anthony D Lee, Dylan Teague, Rob Williams, Simon Williams and many, many more. Tickets cost just £5 and are available from the Expo’s website. More information about the event is available on Facebook, and follow the team on Twitter to keep up to date with the latest updates. Hope to see you there!
I should have posted this an age ago, but didn’t. Just a very quick post to let you know I’ll be at this years SCIFI WEEKENDER at Hafan y Môr, Pwllheli, Wales (coincidentally just a couple of minutes drive from Criccieth, the setting for the climactic scenes of STRAIGHT TO YOU – come to Wales and visit the end of the world!).
The event takes place between 27 and 30 March, and you can find all the information you need right here. I’m really looking forward to this one. Last year, when I wasn’t on panels, I spent most of my time just talking to folks, soaking up the atmosphere and selling books. This year that’s ALL I’m planning on doing. Hope to catch up with a few of you there!
I’m really pleased to announce what promises to be a brilliant event – WAYNE SIMMONS and I are going head-to-head at Esquires Coffee Bar in Coventry, in an evening of readings, Q&As, anecdotes and whatever else we feel like talking about, all sponsored by our great friends at This is Horror and Waterstones Coventry. Tickets are just £3 (£2 can be redeemed off book purchases on the night) and can be purchased on the door on the night. To reserve a ticket, email: Michael@ThisIsHorror.co.uk.
Huge thanks to Tim Sparvero for designing the excellent poster.
I hope to see many of you there! Copies of the new edition of AUTUMN: THE HUMAN CONDITION – paperback and limited edition hardcover – will be available to purchase on the night.
Really looking forward to the Sci-Fi Weekender in Wales this coming weekend. The schedule for the event has been announced, so I thought I’d let you know what I’ll be up to. I’ll be around from early Friday ’til late Saturday, and apart from disappearing to catch a few choice guests/films, you’ll be able to find me in the traders area alongside Wayne Simmons. I’ll also be on display here:
Friday – 14:00: Panel – Here Come the Boys: A male view of writing and editing
Friday – 15:00: Forbidden Planet signing
Saturday – 12:00: Panel – It’s the End! Why the end of the world is so popular
Saturday – 13:00: Panel – Writing Horror: Why we love to be scared
Saturday – 14:00: Panel – It’s Alive! Horror fiction through the years
It’s going to be excellent. Looking forward to seeing you there!
Here are the full details of the Edinburgh event I mentioned recently. Organised by This is Horror, it takes place at Blackwell’s bookstore on 30th March from 3pm – 5pm. It’s a free but ticketed event. To reserve tickets, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line ‘This Is Horror Event’ or call 0131 622 8218.
I’ll be there alongside Joseph D’Lacey and Gary McMahon, and the event will be hosted by Jasper Bark. It promises to be an excellent afternoon and I hope to see you there.
Check out this wonderful promotional poster created by the very talented Daniele Serra.
