Straight to You – updated

The first of this week’s free STRAIGHT TO YOU chapters has been added and is now available for your reading pleasure. The temperature here in the UK may have dropped dramatically since last week’s highs, but the heat in the book is continuing to climb…

Update 28 July – the second of this week’s chapters has now been added. Steven’s desperate, red hot road trip begins in earnest…

Perfect reading for the heatwave – updated

We’re in the middle of a heatwave here – an ideal time for you to be reading STRAIGHT TO YOU. The first of this week’s free chapters has been added to the book at WATTPAD. Things are going from bad to worse for our sun-scorched hero Steven (and I’m not giving away any secrets when I tell you things are going to get a lot worse for him yet…)

heatwave

And yes, this map shows the weather in and around Birmingham as I write. 31 degrees at 8:00pm – that’s not normal. Is this the beginning of the end? (probably not, but I’ll happily start the rumour if it’ll help me shift a few more books!)

UPDATE – 21 July – the second of this week’s chapters has now been added. Read it here.

Straight to You – the movie that never was

It’s Tuesday, so the first of this week’s chapters has been added to the free online serialisation of STRAIGHT TO YOU over at Wattpad. Did you know the book almost became a movie once? I wrote about the whole bizarre saga a couple of years back, and you can find the article here.

I hope you’re enjoying the serialisation of the book. Next chapter will be up on Thursday. In the meantime, please read, vote, share etc. I’d love as many people as possible to read the novel.

This is Horror and Straight to You

I had an absolute blast taking part in the live 100th THIS IS HORROR podcast. It was a real laugh, very interactive, and we covered all manner of topics including the HATER movie, the new HATER trilogy, mental health issues and writing, Year of the Zombie, and many other things. We also talked about the current serialisation of STRAIGHT TO YOU on Wattpad, and this is the perfect time to tell you that the second of this week’s chapters has now been added for your (free) reading pleasure.

If you missed Sunday’s podcast and have a couple of hours spare, you can listen to the show here.

It was twenty years ago today…

Man, I hate the Beatles (sorry, folks), but that seemed like an appropriate title for this post because, on 26 September, it will be exactly twenty years since the first version of my first novel, STRAIGHT TO YOU, was released. My dislike of the original and my love of the rewritten version has been well documented, but I thought I shouldn’t let the twentieth anniversary of the book pass unmarked.

I’ll be serialising the 2014 version of the book (ie the good one) on Wattpad between now and 26 September. New chapters will be posted every Tuesday and Thursday, and the first chapter is available right now.

Why Wattpad? Quite simply, because I love it. It’s a great platform that’s growing with real speed in terms of audience and impact (you might remember the 5th Wave story I wrote for them last year). You can still read TRUST on the site – more than 200,000 people have already done so!

Enjoy STRAIGHT TO YOU. It’s a book I’m (finally after twenty years) insanely proud of.

The 5th Wave – London Under Attack

5th WaveHave you heard of THE 5TH WAVE? It’s a wildly successful apocalyptic YA book series by Rick Yancey. The novel first caught my eye thanks to a pretty spectacular trailer which accompanied its release back in 2013, and a big-budget movie adaptation (starring Chloë Grace Moretz and Liev Schreiberhits the screens early next year. When WATTPAD and SONY PICTURES asked me to write a UK-based short story about the first wave, I leapt at the chance.

You know, I think I’m generally pretty hard on my characters (and let’s face it, most of them deserve it), but I have nothing on Yancey. The 5th Wave deals with an alien invasion where the invaders inflict the titular apocalyptic waves on the planet in quick succession. The first wave – lights out – is an electromagnetic pulse which knocks out all electricity around the globe. That’s swiftly followed by literal waves as a series of tsunamis are triggered. As if that’s not enough, a devastating pandemic is then unleashed. The fourth wave is more subtle but no less deadly as the aliens appear among us, disguising themselves by taking human form. And the fifth wave…? Who knows. All will soon be revealed. The final book in the series is due out next year.TooYoung

The first two parts of my story (called TOO YOUNG TO BE OLD) are available to read right now at Wattpad. Please head over and check them out or use the widget I’ve embedded below. The final two parts will follow later this year. It would make me very happy if you’d read, vote, comment and share the story.

And to get you in the mood and whet your appetite, here’s the trailer for the movie:

And here’s the story:

Trust – free versions disappearing shortly

Trust 2012 coverA little advance warning: the free online versions of TRUST will shortly disappear. At the moment you can read the entire novel at www.trustdavidmoody.com and Wattpad, but I’ll be removing the last third or so of the book from these sites at the beginning of August. Why? A couple of reasons, actually.

First, as I’ve already revealed, I’ll be serialising the brand new version of STRAIGHT TO YOU from late summer onwards. The reality of life as a writer at the moment is that I can’t afford to give away as much of my work as I’d like. My kids are a demanding lot. They’re always after something… food, clothes, a roof over their heads, those kinds of things! Over the years I think I must have given away upwards of a million free books, and there are plenty more to come, so I can’t be accused of being stingy.

Second, I’m planning to try a few new things with TRUST, which I’ll tell you more about in due course. I won’t be able to judge the success of these initiatives if the free versions remain available.

But there are positives! The price of the ebook will be reduced next month (at $2.99/£1.99 it’s hardly expensive as it is), and if you already own the ebook, the paperback or the limited edition hardcover edition of the novel, you can benefit from the Infected Books initiative I mentioned recently. If you own the ebook, click here to claim a discount on the signed print editions, and if you have the print editions, click here to download a complementary ebook.

Right. Have a great weekend. Stay safe in the sun and come back here next week for (at long last) more details about the limited edition Infected Books/Gollancz edition of AUTUMN: AFTERMATH.
