Okay, here at long last are the details for the Infected Books limited edition hardcover of TRUST which will be released on Monday 3rd September.
The release is strictly limited to 500 signed and numbered copies. The image you see here is just for effect – the real book is far better looking with a full wraparound dust jacket designed by Craig Paton. As well as the 2012 version of the novel, the limited edition also includes an exclusive (and snappily titled, I think!) 5,000 word essay about the novel: ‘Standing on the Edge of a Cliff, Thinking About the End of the World.’
The book will be priced at £25 plus postage, and will be available direct from Infected Books. You can click here to pre-order. There’s a 10% discount and reduced postage rates on all orders received before the end of August.
One more thing… several other Infected Books releases are being planned for the next couple of years, with three titles already in the pipeline – two for 2013 and one in early 2014. There will be limited edition hardcovers of each of these books, all numbered and signed as per this release of TRUST. If you pre-order TRUST, you’ll be invited to buy the subsequent IB releases before general pre-orders for those books begin.
Hope this is all okay. Thanks for your patience. Sorry it took a while longer than planned to get these details out. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
There have been several reasons for the lack of activity on this site recently. Some of them you already know about, namely JOE AND ME and TRUST (more information about TRUST coming next week, by the way). Some reasons I haven’t shared yet, though, and they include finishing the first 100,000 word draft of a brand new novel, preparatory work on a new five book horror/science-fiction series, planning the rewrite of STRAIGHT TO YOU, outlining another new novel (as close as I’ll ever get to a vampire story), and finishing up work on the script for ISOLATION (yes, it is still happening and yes, I’ll tell you more about it very soon).
There’s something else that’s been eating up my time recently – moving house. Barring any last-minute hitches, my family and I should be relocating in the next month or so. That might not be particularly interesting to anyone but us, but there are a couple of implications you might want to know about.
Firstly, I’ve got an enormous number of books in my loft, and I want to get rid of most of them. So I’m having a clearance sale. Head over to www.infectedbooks.co.uk now to pick up a few bargains. There are a handful of Infected Books paperback editions of AUTUMN as well as the last box of copies of the original 1996 release of STRAIGHT TO YOU, all going at reasonable prices. All the books are in mint condition and will be signed.
Second… does anyone still use VHS? I ask because I’ve got a couple of hundred assorted movies on tape which are of no use to me whatsoever. They’re going free to anyone who wants them, but there are a couple of conditions: 1. that whoever has them takes the lot (because I don’t have time to split them up) and, 2. you need to be in the UK and able to collect (because I’m not paying the postage on four huge boxes of tapes!). If you’re interested (serious enquiries only, please), then get in touch and we’ll talk. Bear in mind that these are mostly horror and science-fiction movies collected by yours truly between 1989 and 1997 (I think) and there are more than a few howlers in there. I’ll happily send a list of titles to those who are genuinely interested.
Have a good weekend (and don’t forget to visit www.infectedbooks.co.uk)!
I promised to tell you about two new projects this week. Here’s the second.
Ten years ago, I started out by giving books away. When that strategy began to work, I set up Infected Books and moved into self-publishing, though I preferred to call it independent publishing, not least because of all the negative connotations self-publishing had (and, to an extent, still has).
Since then I’ve been fortunate to have been published traditionally in a number of different countries, and I’ve sold more books than I ever dared dream. I still get asked constantly about my self-publishing days, and I often find myself wondering what would happen if I did it again today. The marketplace has changed so dramatically over the years and has grown so much, and recently I’ve been wondering how an Infected Books release would fare in 2012.
It’s time to find out. It’s time for an experiment.
This coming July, I’ll be releasing a fully re-written and expanded version of TRUST – a book which has been unavailable since 2008 – through Infected Books. TRUST will be available from launch as a low price eBook, a mass market paperback, and a limited edition hardcover. Not only that, the entire book will also be serialised free online, with chapters being posted each Monday and Friday through until the end of 2012.
This doesn’t mean I’ve given up on traditional publishing (nor, hopefully, that traditional publishers have given up on me). With both the AUTUMN and HATER series recently having come to an end in quick succession, this is the ideal time for me to stop and consider all my options. Right now I’m working on a number of projects which I hope will find homes with other publishers, but equally I have a lot of other material in development which I think might benefit from this independent approach.
Exciting times. Who knows where this will lead! More details to come shortly…
I’ve just emailed the final corrections to my publishers, so that means AUTUMN: DISINTEGRATION is at last finally ready for publication.
It’s been a long haul. The book was originally announced in early 2006, and I intended to write it as soon as I’d finished the project I was working on at the time (that was HATER, by the way). A combination of work (I was working full time and trying to run Infected Books – a full-time job in itself back then), family issues, and various other distractions (such as the AUTUMN movie entering production, Guillermo del Toro becoming associated with the movie adaptation of HATER, and Thomas Dunne Books acquiring worldwide rights to the HATER series) prevented me from actually finishing the book until June 2008. I was poised, ready to release DISINTEGRATION through Infected Books, when I found myself in London meeting the team from Gollancz who’d just obtained the UK rights to HATER. They asked what else I was working on, and I duly handed them copies of the AUTUMN books (which I just happened to have with me!). They asked me not to do anything with DISINTEGRATION just yet, and who was I to argue? Within two months, the AUTUMN books had also been bought by Thomas Dunne.
Traditional publishing is usually much, much slower than self- or independent- publishing (I used to have books on sale within weeks of having finished writing them – now it’s years…). Even with the accelerated release schedule the AUTUMN books have enjoyed both in the UK and US, it’s taken another three and a half years to finally get close to the release of DISINTEGRATION.
I’m sorry for the delay. Thanks for sticking with me!
Last week I gave you a little background information about the book and hinted at the plot. This week I wanted to explain a little more about how DISINTEGRATION fits in with the rest of the AUTUMN series.
Happy New Year to everyone here, on Facebook, Twitter, and everywhere else this blog gets syndicated. I hope you all enjoyed the holidays and here’s to a fantastic 2011 for all of us.
2011 started well for Kate Prince of Lapenty, France – she’s the winner of my recent AUTUMN ‘name the domain’ competition. Her winning suggestion was ‘last of the living’ which I really liked because, like the books, it puts the emphasis on the living rather than the dead. Congratulations again Kate, and thanks to everyone else who entered. The new website, with a name inspired by Kate’s suggestion, is my first priority for the new year and will be launched soon.
Just a quick reminder that you can still order signed books from www.infectedbooks.co.uk. Copies of the UK hardcover edition of AUTUMN: THE CITY (complete with its ‘angry leaf’ cover – thanks SFX!) will be added at the end of the month. As I mentioned previously, right now I’m donating a sum to charity for each book sold (click here to find out more).
It’s that time of year again… I’ve just updated the INFECTED BOOKS website with details of this year’s signed book sale. Please head on over for a chance to pick up some signed editions. There are copies of the new UK hardcover edition of AUTUMN, and some great discounts on US and UK editions of HATER.
This year I’m also pleased to announce that I’ll be donating to charity for each book sold. The charity is SMIRA (Selective Mutism Information & Research Association), and here’s a reminder of why I’m supporting them.

Those of you who caught the AUTUMN books first time around will probably remember my ‘Spread the Infection’ tagline. I used it for years, and I’m sure it was responsible to some degree for the book’s journey from free pdf to half a million downloads, a movie, an audio adaptation, and now mainstream publication.
They’ve been unavailable for far too long, but the re-release of the AUTUMN series is close at hand. The first book is out in late October (US and UK – click the covers for information, Spain and Germany – you already have it!), and books two, three and four will be following in quick succession throughout 2011.
I’ll be able to give you more details about the release very soon. In the meantime, I wanted to ask a couple of favours…
First off, I want your memories of AUTUMN first time around for some articles I’m putting together. I’ve had emails from people who were freaked out reading the free download while working alone on the night shift, others who printed the pdf off and read it in class… please let me know how you found out about the series. Also, if you were involved in the book in any way and we haven’t spoken for a while (I’ve particularly been trying to get hold of Dave Joseph who created the face on the original cover if anyone can help), then please get in touch.
Secondly, I’d really appreciate it if you’d help me ‘Spread the Infection’ again. Follow me on Facebook, Friend Feed or Twitter, sign up for the newsletter (see sidebar), and invite your friends to do the same…
There’s going to be a lot going on with the accelerated re-release of the novels – including plenty of free fiction and much more – and there will be many opportunities to get involved so I’d like as many people as possible to know!
Thanks! More very soon!
A very limited number of signed copies of the UK edition of DOG BLOOD (both hardback and paperback versions) have just been made available to buy via www.infectedbooks.co.uk.
You may remember that I had a clear-out before Christmas and offered a stack of books for sale through www.infectedbooks.co.uk. The sale’s pretty much over now with just a handful of foreign language editions and a few copies of Straight to You left.
Everyone who bought books from the sale automatically got entered into a draw for a few special prizes. I’m pleased to announce that the winner was Alan Hickey from Lancashire, UK. Congratulations, Alan! The following goodies will be on their way to you shortly:
That’s a copy of the HATER audiobook on CD (worth around £60!), a framed AUTUMN movie print signed by Dickon Tolson (who plays Carl) and myself, and a copy of 666: The Number Of The Beast – a YA anthology containing a story of mine, Grandma Kelly.
Congratulations again, Alan! For those of you who missed out on the sale, don’t worry. I’m planning something similar for later in the year to coincide with the release of DOG BLOOD.
Spanish readers will be interested to know that Septiembre Zombie, the Spanish edition of Autumn, will be released by Minotauro on 23rd February.
Before you hit me with another thousand emails about the re-release of the Autumn books in English, here’s a little teaser for you. Book one, as you may know, will be released in September this year. The rest of the books, including the long-awaited debut of Autumn: Disintegration will follow VERY soon after. I’ll let you know exact dates as soon as they’re confirmed.
And by the way, if you were planning on picking up one of the spare copies of the Infected Books edition of Autumn I’ve been selling, you’d better get in quick. There are just a handful left. You can get them over at www.infectedbooks.co.uk.
