Happy Holidays!

This post was prepared in advance so, if you’re reading this, the world obviously didn’t end last Friday (it obviously wasn’t going to anyway – when will people stop believing in fairytales and bullshit?) and I can keep writing about the apocalypse for a while longer yet! This is my last post of 2012 and I wanted to briefly look back, look forward, and say a few thanks.

It’s been an interesting year for me personally, to say the least. Various issues at home kept me away from work for far longer than I expected (pretty much from mid-March right the way through to mid-September), but since then my family and I have been in a far better place and, though you haven’t yet seen the benefits, I’ve actually been quite productive! All that said, I managed to get a few books out in the last year. I’m particularly pleased with AUTUMN: AFTERMATH, JOE & ME, and TRUST (which is now online in its entirety at www.trustdavidmoody.com).

As is often the way, some stuff didn’t happen. We managed to make very little progress with ISOLATION, for example, but I hope we’ll put that right early in the new year.

Some of the highlights of the year for me were spent in the company of other people. Wayne Simmons and I did a lot of joint events, and I enjoyed every minute of them (even the odd tumbleweed moments in far-flung branches of Waterstones, Wayne!). I’m already planning my schedule for 2013 with several events pencilled in including trips to Scotland and Spain. But I can’t look back at 2012 without mentioning the two occasions I got to meet and spend time with James Herbert (click here to remind yourself what happened). What an absolute honour.

So what’s coming in 2013? I’ve already talked a bit about what I’ve got planned. Top priority is to finish 17 DAYS (which you can read a little about here). Next up will be the first book in my new horror/science-fiction series THE SPACES BETWEEN, as well as STRANGERS (which is the closest I’m ever going to get to a vampire novel – and as I’ve already said, it’ll be a disease and depravity-filled read without a sparkle in sight).

I’m planning to continue the resurgence of INFECTED BOOKS in the new year with, as I recently mentioned, the AUTUMN: AFTERMATH limited edition hardcover, and the definitive reissue of AUTUMN: THE HUMAN CONDITION. If time allows, I’m also considering giving STRAIGHT TO YOU the same treatment as TRUST – i.e. total rewrite and online serialisation. Watch this space.

That’s about it for now. I just wanted to thank all the authors and other professionals I’ve worked with this year, and all the event organisers too. Huge thanks as always to Moody’s Survivors. Finally, sincere thanks to everyone who bought one of my books this year, or who encouraged someone else to read my work. I don’t say it enough, but I’m hugely appreciative.

Whoever you are, wherever you are, whatever you do or don’t celebrate, best wishes. Have a fantastic holiday period and here’s to a brilliant 2013!

TRUST – entire novel free online (just in time for the apocalypse)

Five months seems to have flown by in five minutes. I’ve been serialising TRUST since the 23rd July and today the final chapters have been posted. The entire novel is now available for your reading pleasure at www.trustdavidmoody.com. The book will be staying online until the end of January at least, though I’ve not yet decided exactly how long. That’s assuming, of course, the world doesn’t end today!

trust

Please share the book with your friends or via Facebook or Twitter etc. If you’d prefer a physical copy to read, you can always pick up the paperback (Amazon/B&N/Book Depository/Waterstones/Infected Books) or the limited edition signed hardcover (which includes an exclusive essay). The eBook is available in a range of formats: Kindle/Nook/Kobo/iBook/ePub/everything else.

Huge thanks once again to Craig Paton for the stunning artwork he produced for the book (click here to see a selection), and to Dan Boucher for turning a 2001-style Flash movie into a 2012-style landing screen. Thanks also to all the reviewers who gave the book their time, and to Moody’s Survivors for their support and help with publicity. Cheers, all!

I’ve really enjoyed revisiting TRUST and putting together this definitive version. Resurrecting Infected Books has been a pleasure, and I’ve a few more IB releases planned for 2013 including the AUTUMN: AFTERMATH hardcover, and a long-overdue re-release of AUTUMN: THE HUMAN CONDITION.

2012 Book Clearance Sale

The Infected Books website has been updated with a full list of signed books available in my annual book sale. Visit www.infectedbooks.co.uk for more information. Copies of the UK paperback edition of AUTUMN: AFTERMATH are now shipping! Bring a little apocalyptic horror into your family’s Christmas this year!

And as it’s Monday, a new chapter of TRUST is also available. Chapter 40 is now online at www.trustdavidmoody.com.

What’s next?

I’m conscious that there are a lot of empty spaces on this site right now. The HATER and AUTUMN series are all but finished (though not quite) and the serialisation of TRUST is well underway, but other than that I don’t seem to have many updates to share with you right now. That’s largely because I’m working on a number of new projects, and there’s not a lot to tell about any of them just yet. In any event, I thought I’d give you the barest of details to try and whet your appetites and keep your interest. It also might explain why I’m not around here as much as I’d like.

In no particular order then, here are the projects I’m currently planning/writing/developing/working on…

17 DAYS
A brand new novel which I hope to have written by the end of September. Those of you who’ve been following me for a while might remember MARK THANE – an aborted serialised novel from 2005/6 (I think). 17 DAYS takes the germ of Mark Thane’s story and beefs it up by adding a few healthy dollops of social breakdown and urban terrorism into the mix. It’s actually broader in appeal than anything I’ve written before, I think, and I love it.

THE SPACES BETWEEN
A five (and a half) book series set in a dystopian future not too far removed from today’s reality. Greg Dawson is an armed social worker and one of the few remaining people who still genuinely gives a damn about anyone else. Many of the social and political problems we’re facing today have continued to fester, and the UK has become a dangerous place to live (unless you’ve got power and/or money, and 99% of the population have neither). Dawson’s work brings him into contact with the extremes of the social spectrum, and a series of diverse cases results in him uncovering things no one should have to face. There’s a rumour the world’s going to end soon, but that’s the very least of Dawson’s problems. This one’s going to take a while to see the light of day – it’s an intricate story, so all the individual books have to be fully mapped out before I start writing. With a little luck, I’ll be writing the first book in the series – tentatively titled TOMMY – in early 2013. Think CHILDREN OF MEN meets QUATERMASS, and you’ll start to get an idea of the direction I’m taking with this one.

STRAIGHT TO YOU
I’ve been really pleased with the reception TRUST has had, so I’m going to continue the resurrection of Infected Books by dusting down and re-writing my debut novel from 1996. The plan at the moment is to have the book reworked by early 2013, and to serialise it next year in the same way I’m currently serialising TRUST.

STRANGERS
A quick, dark and dirty horror novel. A really nasty little number. As close to a vampire novel as I’m ever going to get (with absolutely no fangs, capes or sparkly teens). This book is currently being scoped out with a view to (hopefully) trying to bash it out at speed in 2013.

AUTUMN: THE HUMAN CONDITION
Pretty much all of the stories which made up the original release of THE HUMAN CONDITION are now available online at www.lastoftheliving.net. But there’s more… new stories were written to accompany DISINTEGRATION and AFTERMATH, and to further expand the AUTUMN universe (did you read JOE & ME?). I’d like, therefore, to produce a definitive version of The Human Condition (mass market paperback, eBook, limited edition hardcover) which collects up EVERY additional AUTUMN story. ETA – the second half of 2013.

ISOLATION
A brief final word about Isolation, which I announced at the beginning of the year and have so far completely failed to update you about. It is happening. It will be made. We have a great team working on the project but, inevitably, it’s having to take second place to all our other (paying) commitments. It will be worth the wait, I promise. We’re going to be meeting in the coming weeks to get things moving. More news soon.

So there you go. If I’m not posting much on here, that’s why. I am busy, honest!

TRUST – limited edition hardcover details

Okay, here at long last are the details for the Infected Books limited edition hardcover of TRUST which will be released on Monday 3rd September.

The release is strictly limited to 500 signed and numbered copies. The image you see here is just for effect – the real book is far better looking with a full wraparound dust jacket designed by Craig Paton. As well as the 2012 version of the novel, the limited edition also includes an exclusive (and snappily titled, I think!) 5,000 word essay about the novel: ‘Standing on the Edge of a Cliff, Thinking About the End of the World.’

The book will be priced at £25 plus postage, and will be available direct from Infected Books. You can click here to pre-order. There’s a 10% discount and reduced postage rates on all orders received before the end of August.

One more thing… several other Infected Books releases are being planned for the next couple of years, with three titles already in the pipeline – two for 2013 and one in early 2014. There will be limited edition hardcovers of each of these books, all numbered and signed as per this release of TRUST. If you pre-order TRUST, you’ll be invited to buy the subsequent IB releases before general pre-orders for those books begin.

Hope this is all okay. Thanks for your patience. Sorry it took a while longer than planned to get these details out. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Clearing out

There have been several reasons for the lack of activity on this site recently. Some of them you already know about, namely JOE AND ME and TRUST (more information about TRUST coming next week, by the way). Some reasons I haven’t shared yet, though, and they include finishing the first 100,000 word draft of a brand new novel, preparatory work on a new five book horror/science-fiction series, planning the rewrite of STRAIGHT TO YOU, outlining another new novel (as close as I’ll ever get to a vampire story), and finishing up work on the script for ISOLATION (yes, it is still happening and yes, I’ll tell you more about it very soon).

There’s something else that’s been eating up my time recently – moving house. Barring any last-minute hitches, my family and I should be relocating in the next month or so. That might not be particularly interesting to anyone but us, but there are a couple of implications you might want to know about.

Firstly, I’ve got an enormous number of books in my loft, and I want to get rid of most of them. So I’m having a clearance sale. Head over to www.infectedbooks.co.uk now to pick up a few bargains. There are a handful of Infected Books paperback editions of AUTUMN as well as the last box of copies of the original 1996 release of STRAIGHT TO YOU, all going at reasonable prices. All the books are in mint condition and will be signed.

Second… does anyone still use VHS? I ask because I’ve got a couple of hundred assorted movies on tape which are of no use to me whatsoever. They’re going free to anyone who wants them, but there are a couple of conditions: 1. that whoever has them takes the lot (because I don’t have time to split them up) and, 2. you need to be in the UK and able to collect (because I’m not paying the postage on four huge boxes of tapes!). If you’re interested (serious enquiries only, please), then get in touch and we’ll talk. Bear in mind that these are mostly horror and science-fiction movies collected by yours truly between 1989 and 1997 (I think) and there are more than a few howlers in there. I’ll happily send a list of titles to those who are genuinely interested.

Have a good weekend (and don’t forget to visit www.infectedbooks.co.uk)!

TRUST

I promised to tell you about two new projects this week. Here’s the second.

Ten years ago, I started out by giving books away. When that strategy began to work, I set up Infected Books and moved into self-publishing, though I preferred to call it independent publishing, not least because of all the negative connotations self-publishing had (and, to an extent, still has).

Since then I’ve been fortunate to have been published traditionally in a number of different countries, and I’ve sold more books than I ever dared dream. I still get asked constantly about my self-publishing days, and I often find myself wondering what would happen if I did it again today. The marketplace has changed so dramatically over the years and has grown so much, and recently I’ve been wondering how an Infected Books release would fare in 2012.

It’s time to find out. It’s time for an experiment.

This coming July, I’ll be releasing a fully re-written and expanded version of TRUST – a book which has been unavailable since 2008 – through Infected Books. TRUST will be available from launch as a low price eBook, a mass market paperback, and a limited edition hardcover. Not only that, the entire book will also be serialised free online, with chapters being posted each Monday and Friday through until the end of 2012.

This doesn’t mean I’ve given up on traditional publishing (nor, hopefully, that traditional publishers have given up on me). With both the AUTUMN and HATER series recently having come to an end in quick succession, this is the ideal time for me to stop and consider all my options. Right now I’m working on a number of projects which I hope will find homes with other publishers, but equally I have a lot of other material in development which I think might benefit from this independent approach.

Exciting times. Who knows where this will lead! More details to come shortly…

Autumn: Disintegration – long delays and parallel sequels

I’ve just emailed the final corrections to my publishers, so that means AUTUMN: DISINTEGRATION is at last finally ready for publication.

It’s been a long haul. The book was originally announced in early 2006, and I intended to write it as soon as I’d finished the project I was working on at the time (that was HATER, by the way). A combination of work (I was working full time and trying to run Infected Books – a full-time job in itself back then), family issues, and various other distractions (such as the AUTUMN movie entering production, Guillermo del Toro becoming associated with the movie adaptation of HATER, and Thomas Dunne Books acquiring worldwide rights to the HATER series) prevented me from actually finishing the book until June 2008. I was poised, ready to release DISINTEGRATION through Infected Books, when I found myself in London meeting the team from Gollancz who’d just obtained the UK rights to HATER. They asked what else I was working on, and I duly handed them copies of the AUTUMN books (which I just happened to have with me!). They asked me not to do anything with DISINTEGRATION just yet, and who was I to argue? Within two months, the AUTUMN books had also been bought by Thomas Dunne.

Traditional publishing is usually much, much slower than self- or independent- publishing (I used to have books on sale within weeks of having finished writing them – now it’s years…). Even with the accelerated release schedule the AUTUMN books have enjoyed both in the UK and US, it’s taken another three and a half years to finally get close to the release of DISINTEGRATION.

I’m sorry for the delay. Thanks for sticking with me!

Last week I gave you a little background information about the book and hinted at the plot. This week I wanted to explain a little more about how DISINTEGRATION fits in with the rest of the AUTUMN series.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year to everyone here, on Facebook, Twitter, and everywhere else this blog gets syndicated. I hope you all enjoyed the holidays and here’s to a fantastic 2011 for all of us.

2011 started well for Kate Prince of Lapenty, France – she’s the winner of my recent AUTUMN ‘name the domain’ competition. Her winning suggestion was ‘last of the living’ which I really liked because, like the books, it puts the emphasis on the living rather than the dead. Congratulations again Kate, and thanks to everyone else who entered. The new website, with a name inspired by Kate’s suggestion, is my first priority for the new year and will be launched soon.

Just a quick reminder that you can still order signed books from www.infectedbooks.co.uk. Copies of the UK hardcover edition of AUTUMN: THE CITY (complete with its ‘angry leaf’ cover – thanks SFX!) will be added at the end of the month. As I mentioned previously, right now I’m donating a sum to charity for each book sold (click here to find out more).

2010 Signed Book Sale

It’s that time of year again… I’ve just updated the INFECTED BOOKS website with details of this year’s signed book sale. Please head on over for a chance to pick up some signed editions. There are copies of the new UK hardcover edition of AUTUMN, and some great discounts on US and UK editions of HATER.

This year I’m also pleased to announce that I’ll be donating to charity for each book sold. The charity is SMIRA (Selective Mutism Information & Research Association), and here’s a reminder of why I’m supporting them.

Click here or on the Infected Books logo to head over to the sale!
