Time for an update

Hello. I hate not posting here regularly, but there are times when it’s unavoidable. Now is most definitely one of those times. I’ve truly never been busier, though you’d be hard pushed to know given the gap between posts on this site. That’s not likely to change in the next few months, but I think some kind of update is long overdue.

Last weekend I finished writing KAI, a middle-grade novel. I say finished… what I mean by that is I got the book into good enough shape to be able to fire it over to my agent for his feedback, and I’m now waiting nervously for him to get back to me. I’m keeping the story close to my chest. For now I’ll describe it as a weird hybrid of ET and Godzilla, and I’ll leave it at that.

Next week I start a new novel – the first book in the SPACES BETWEEN series (at long last). It was called TOMMY, but it’s now been re-named ELYSIAN FIELDS. I’m in the habit of teasing future projects by referring to their influences, so how does Blade Runner by way of Breaking Bad by way of Nordic Noir with more than a touch of Quatermass sound?

I’ve managed to catch up with Wayne Simmons a couple of times recently, and we’ve been busily plotting and planning the future of Infected Books. We have a few IB releases scheduled between now and the end of this year, but much of our time has been spent working on something massive for 2016. That’s the whole of 2016.

It’s funny – there are some books which never seem to want to go away. That’s a good thing, I think. One of those books is HATER, and it’s been occupying a lot of my time again recently. I have a meeting scheduled for later this week. I can’t say too much just yet, but for those of you who’ve given up hope of ever seeing HATER on the big screen, don’t. More news as and when I’m allowed to share.

And a quick question to whet your appetites/ test the water… going back to HATER again has given me the spark of an idea for a (non-Danny McCoyne) standalone HATER novel. It’s almost four years since THEM OR US hit the shelves, so is that something you’d still be interested in reading?

So that about sums up what I’ve been doing in the first four months of 2015. It’s heads down again now, but please do keep checking back. I have plenty of film and book recommendations planned, the return of WHAT WORKS FOR ME, guest posts and much more. And if you want the scoop on any of the projects I’ve just mentioned, this is where you’ll get it!

Free ebooks via Bitlit

UPDATE APRIL 2017: Bitlit (which went on to be renamed Shelfie) sadly closed its virtual doors in January 2017. The service has since been acquired by Kobo. Visit www.shelfie.com for more information.

By now I guess you know my philosophy – I only want people to buy the same book once. If you buy a paperback, I want you to be able to download the ebook version for free. Similarly, if you buy an ebook then wish you’d bought a print edition, I think you should only have to pay the paperback cost less the price you originally paid for the ebook.

Economics and practicalities sometimes make achieving these aims difficult, but I’m always on the look out for ways to simplify the process. Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce Bitlit.

BlogPost_iPhone_Blue

Bitlit is an app, available for iOS and Android. It’s beautifully simple: you take a shelfie with your camera (ie a picture of your bookshelf), and the app scans the titles you’ve got, identifies them, and directs you to free or low price versions of the books you already have in print (where available). I’m pleased to say that we’re making Infected Books titles available free via the service, and you can now download STRAIGHT TO YOU, AUTUMN: THE HUMAN CONDITION, TRUST and STRANGERS for free from Bitlit (as long as you own a print version, of course).

Don’t want to use Bitlit? Already own the ebook? Visit the Infected Books site for more information.

Something for the weekend?

Remember me? I know… it’s been deathly quiet around here lately. As I keep saying, there’s a lot happening behind the scenes that I can’t talk about yet (don’t you just hate it when people post that kind of empty, bullshit comment and leave you hanging?!).

Anyway, here’s something for you. From now until midnight Sunday, you can download my gruesome little zombie invasion story THE COST OF LIVING for absolutely nothing. Zip. Bugger all. I hope you enjoy it (though enjoy probably isn’t the right word to use). Click here or on the banner below to get it.

CostofLiving slide

I’ll be back soon with some fresh news. Big news. Honest. Until then, I need to get back to writing about man-eating monsters destroying Birmingham (sorry, Birmingham).

LAST OF THE LIVING ebook

While I’ve got my head down working on new projects (and that’s what I am doing, honest), I’m also trying to catch up on an ever-increasing backlog of emails, blurbs, business things to organise, and so on. Sometimes things slip through the net, and I have a feeling that’s what might have happened here. I can’t remember posting about the ebook version of LAST OF THE LIVING.

LAST-OF-THE-LIVINGYou’ll probably remember that I released a couple of Kindle-exclusive zombie novellas last year: THE COST OF LIVING and ISOLATION. Together with various other zombie shorts (some reprints, others written specifically for the project), these stories amounted to around 90,000 words of fiction, which is about the length of a novel.

I’m conscious that not everyone like ebooks, so we released all this undead goodness in print as LAST OF THE LIVING. You can find out more about the collection here, and signed copies are available direct from Infected Books or from Amazon or eBay. In keeping with the Infected Books ebook ethos, if you buy the paperback edition of LAST OF THE LIVING – from any source – you’re entitled to download a complementary ebook version. And here’s the bit I don’t think I made clear before: the complementary ebook is available for Nook, iBooks and Kobo as well as Kindle.

Apologies to anyone who’s held off reading the stories because of format issues.

Keep and eye on the Infected Books site in the near future, because we’re going to be announcing a partnership that’ll make it easier than ever for you to claim your complementary ebooks when you pick up an IB release. Why not check out the range today and see if there are any you’re missing? There are always good deals on, and every book you order direct from IB comes personally signed by me!

Two Bald Blokes – Back on the Road

Remember when Wayne Simmons and I embarked on our ‘Never Trust a Man with Hair‘ tour a couple of years back? Well, we’re getting the band back together!

I’m very excited to announce we’ll be appearing together at Southcart Books in Walsall on February 21 at 3:00pm. Hear us read, bicker, reminisce, talk about the future of Infected Books and publishing as a whole, and generally put the world to rights.

fight night

This was originally to be an event hosted by Jasper Bark to support the release of his new Prime Cuts but, unfortunately, Jasper can no longer make it. Keep an eye on Southcart Books, though, as he’ll now be appearing there in March.

Southcart Books can be found on Facebook here, and in the real world here:

Signed books back in stock

Signed copies of STRANGERS are back in stock over at www.infectedbooks.co.uk. They’re disappearing fast (again) so please order quickly if you want one.

I know it’s probably the wrong side of Christmas to be telling you this, but there are a few other interesting things available at Infected Books right now. There’s a copy of the rare and very limited hardcover edition of TRUST, and copies of my last zombie-release LAST OF THE LIVING. If you use the exclusive This is Horror discount code, you can also get the limited hardcover of AUTUMN: THE HUMAN CONDITION for the ridiculously low price of £10 (with free delivery if you’re in the UK).

You can find the This is Horror discount code on the JOE & ME free download page. This seems like an ideal opportunity to mention that I’ll be taking part in a live This is Horror podcast in February. If you have any questions, email them to the address on the download page.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to you all. I thought I’d kick off 2015 with a quick look back at my 2014 releases (just in case you missed any), and a peek at my plans for 2015. Despite being a pig of a year for me on many levels, I was surprisingly productive, releasing two full-length novels (STRAIGHT TO YOU and STRANGERS), a zombie novella collection (LAST OF THE LIVING, which included ISOLATION and THE COST OF LIVING along with a number of other shorts), and the long-overdue limited edition hardcover of AUTUMN: AFTERMATH.

I also managed a couple of short stories too, most notably THE LUCKY ONES (which appeared in DEAD WATER), THE DEVIL (from THE BLACK FANG BETRAYAL) and THE DEAL – a story which is exclusively available to newsletter subscribers. And, of course, there’s the free audio download of JOE & ME.

So what does 2015 hold? There’s a lot being planned behind the scenes, and I thought I’d pile the pressure on myself by announcing the major projects I’m working on this year. Notice there are no timescales quoted here (I never seem to keep to them anyway!) but this is the order I’m tackling these novels.

KAI
My first middle-grade novel. Think ET meets GODZILLA and you’re halfway there.

THE SPACES BETWEEN: ELYSIAN FIELDS
The first book in my long-teased horror/ science-fiction/ noir crime series. If you’ve not heard me talking about this one before, here’s a quick tease: Several years ago London was destroyed in a white-hot nuclear haze. Millions of people were displaced, and huge numbers ended up in rapidly constructed newcities like Elysian Fields. Designed to house around one hundred thousand, the population of Elysian Fields is several times that. It’s a dangerous, sprawling hell-hole of a place ruled by gangs, violence and fear. When a prominent business leader’s son disappears, social worker Greg Dawson becomes embroiled in the mission to snatch him back. But the more Dawson discovers about Elysian Fields, the more he comes to realise there’s a huge gulf between what we’re being told and reality. In the spaces between the two, absolutely everything changes.

17 DAYS
Yes, I know… I’ve finished this book twice already, but I’ve still not got it quite right. I had a rollercoaster year last year, and in the midst of all the ups and downs, I’ve realised where I was going wrong. Mark Thane is a downtrodden and overlooked nobody. When he discovers he only has 17 days left to live, he’s forced to question everything. The country is on the verge of revolution, and Mark unwittingly finds himself at the eye of the storm. This time last week no one knew who Mark Thane was. By the time his number’s up, the entire world will be watching his every move.

FOCUS
A sick and twisted love story. Adam’s wife died last summer. He’s not going to let her die again.

So there you go. Plenty of work ahead. Add to this more signing events and the continued expansion of the Infected empire (Infected Films and Infected Audio, anyone?) and that’s more than enough to keep me busy. I hope you’ll stick around, because 2015 is going to be a cracker!

Joe & Me – download and listen NOW!

The free audio version of JOE & ME is now available. Click here to listen and/or download. Happy Christmas from me, This is Horror and Infected Books! Please share far and wide!

Joe and Me (This is Horror, 2012)Joe is anything but an ordinary eight year old. His father’s a stay-at-home dad and his mom’s going to save the world.

Forced to live in cramped quarters after the military pull funding on his mother’s research, Joe is thrown into the midst of a race against the clock to save mankind. As tensions rise and the family disintegrates, they must face an uncomfortable ultimatum.

Do they save each other or humanity?

We’ll be following up this release early in 2015 with a unique LIVE This is Horror podcast. If you have any questions you’d like me to answer on air, please email them to Michael@thisishorror.co.uk.

I hope you enjoy JOE & ME. I had a lot of fun writing and recording it. In case you’re unaware, the story explains a pivotal piece of the overall AUTUMN story. It appears in the 2013 edition of AUTUMN: THE HUMAN CONDITION, and using the discount code thisishorrorjoeandme (original, eh?!), you can order a signed copy of the limited edition hardcover direct from Infected Books for just £10, with free UK delivery (RRP £20).

Finally, as this will probably be my last post here for a while, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support and enthusiasm over the past year, and to wish you and your families all the best for the holiday season.
