Remember me?

I thought it was about time I made an appearance here! It’s been a while, I know. As many of you know, I went back to non-writing work a while ago to save my sanity (seriously, it was doing me no good at all sitting at home on my own all day every day, writing about the end of the world), and that, combined with sorting out my dad’s affairs and working on a surprisingly large number of different writing projects, has led to me neglecting this site. I’m hoping to remedy that in the very near future.

I wanted to take this opportunity to update you on a couple of projects. Firstly, I’m really pleased to announce that Thomas Dunne Books will be publishing the second HATER trilogy, and I’m thrilled to be working with the team there again. I’ve been working hard on the first novel – ONE OF US WILL BE DEAD BY MORNING – and I look forward to bringing you more news in the coming months. OOUWBDBM is a very different kind of HATER novel which sets up a new cast for the other two books (THE OTHER HALF and THE LAST SUMMER) which will weave in and around the events of the original trilogy and bring a new perspective to the overall story. Can’t wait to tell you more.

Tim Long and Craig DiLouie are no doubt cursing me for my lack of speed, but I’m also busy writing THE FRONT: RED DEVILS – a continuation of the World War II with zombies story Tim so excellently kicked off with SCREAMING EAGLES.

All this means THE SPACES BETWEEN books have been on the back burner (again), but never fear – they will be written and you will get to read them. And all those folks who won the competition to appear as characters in the novels will still see their names in print. Unfortunately I can’t give you a timescale (and if I did set myself a deadline, I’d inevitably miss it!).

And that’s not all… YEAR OF THE ZOMBIE continues apace. June’s book will be launched next week, and it’s another cracker. Genuinely unsettling. When Wayne and I were planning this series, we wanted to publish a really diverse range of stories and, six months in, that objective has already been achieved. From Iraq to Wales, from psychological horror to blood and guts, from high octane thriller to slapstick comedy, from hunting zombies to dodging sheep, our authors have really delivered. Check out the releases here. And yes, you might see something from me joining the line-up in the not too distant future…

A bunch of short stories, a host of other novels (KAI, 17 DAYS, WAS SHE NEVER THERE?), the HATER movie… there’s a huge amount of stuff to come from me soon. Thanks for your patience. I’m off for a few days’ break with the family now. Plenty more news when I return.

An update

I thought it was about time I posted a quick writing update. I’m balancing a number of projects at the moment that I hope will come to fruition in the near future. It’s been a busy twelve months and I’ve had to shelve or delay some projects to focus on others. Here’s a quick summary:

ONE OF US WILL BE DEAD BY MORNING
Is the first book in the second HATER trilogy, and I’m well into writing it. I’m scheduled to be done by April 2016, and I hope to be able to announce some exciting news about publication plans for the new series once negotiations are complete.

THE HATER MOVIE
Producer Ed Barratt is currently talking to a number of potentially interested partners about the movie. The script is in cracking shape. More news as soon as I can announce it.

THE FRONT
My book in this World War II zombie series is due out in early 2016. Timothy Long’s first volume will be hitting the shelves shortly, with Craig DiLouie’s book following mine. Very exciting.

TOP SECRET MULTI-AUTHOR INFECTED BOOKS ZOMBIE PROJECT
I’m just tormenting you! Watch for an announcement about something special coming next week.

THE SPACES BETWEEN
Is proving to be a real bugger to write. I’ve spoken about this science-fiction/ horror series on numerous occasions previously (and I’ve a host of competition winners lined up to appear as characters). Thing is, it’s such a huge project set in a really expansive world, that I can’t quite settle on the format and structure. Right now it looks like it’s going to be six volumes long (I’d previously said four): OCTOBER 12, THE COLLECTOR, ELYSIAN FIELDS, MESSIANIC, THE LOW PLACES and ASCENSION DAY. This one will definitely be worth the wait… I’m just sorry that the wait’s proving to be so long.

More soon.

Announcing THE FRONT

When things are quiet here, it’s usually because I’m working hard on stuff in the background (honest). Right now I’m dividing my frustratingly limited writing time between a few major projects: ONE OF US WILL BE DEAD BY MORNING (HATER book #4), a huge Infected Books initiative for 2016, THE SPACES BETWEEN and this one.

A short while ago, top writers and good pals TIM LONG and CRAIG DILOUIE invited me to contribute a book to a brand new three volume World War II zombie series called THE FRONT. How could I refuse? I can’t say too much about it right now, so I’ll just let the cover of volume one do the talking. Tim’s writing this one, and it should hit the shelves in December. My book will be next up in the early part of next year.

TheFront

Exciting, eh? So I’m sorry if I’ve neglected the site a little recently, and I apologise if I’m taking far too long to reply to any emails or messages you’ve sent this way, but at least it means 2016 should be filled to capacity with apocalyptic horror. I can’t wait.

If you want to hear more about this and other projects, don’t forget to come and see WAYNE SIMMONS and I in conversation at Waterstones, New Street Birmingham on 30 October at 7pm. Full details are here.

Time for an update

Hello. I hate not posting here regularly, but there are times when it’s unavoidable. Now is most definitely one of those times. I’ve truly never been busier, though you’d be hard pushed to know given the gap between posts on this site. That’s not likely to change in the next few months, but I think some kind of update is long overdue.

Last weekend I finished writing KAI, a middle-grade novel. I say finished… what I mean by that is I got the book into good enough shape to be able to fire it over to my agent for his feedback, and I’m now waiting nervously for him to get back to me. I’m keeping the story close to my chest. For now I’ll describe it as a weird hybrid of ET and Godzilla, and I’ll leave it at that.

Next week I start a new novel – the first book in the SPACES BETWEEN series (at long last). It was called TOMMY, but it’s now been re-named ELYSIAN FIELDS. I’m in the habit of teasing future projects by referring to their influences, so how does Blade Runner by way of Breaking Bad by way of Nordic Noir with more than a touch of Quatermass sound?

I’ve managed to catch up with Wayne Simmons a couple of times recently, and we’ve been busily plotting and planning the future of Infected Books. We have a few IB releases scheduled between now and the end of this year, but much of our time has been spent working on something massive for 2016. That’s the whole of 2016.

It’s funny – there are some books which never seem to want to go away. That’s a good thing, I think. One of those books is HATER, and it’s been occupying a lot of my time again recently. I have a meeting scheduled for later this week. I can’t say too much just yet, but for those of you who’ve given up hope of ever seeing HATER on the big screen, don’t. More news as and when I’m allowed to share.

And a quick question to whet your appetites/ test the water… going back to HATER again has given me the spark of an idea for a (non-Danny McCoyne) standalone HATER novel. It’s almost four years since THEM OR US hit the shelves, so is that something you’d still be interested in reading?

So that about sums up what I’ve been doing in the first four months of 2015. It’s heads down again now, but please do keep checking back. I have plenty of film and book recommendations planned, the return of WHAT WORKS FOR ME, guest posts and much more. And if you want the scoop on any of the projects I’ve just mentioned, this is where you’ll get it!

THE SPACES BETWEEN – Competition winners

I’m sorry it’s taken so long to announce this… Without further ado, please join me in congratulating the following people who will be appearing in THE SPACES BETWEEN novels.

Overall winner (who will appear as a major character in all four books as well as receiving an illustration of themselves in a key scene and signed first editions of all the novels): Alexandria Amorim.

Runners up (who’ll appear as a supporting character in one book each and who’ll receive signed first editions of all the novels): Chris Shaver, Shannon O’Clair, Nicky Downes, and Mitchell Witthread.

I received an incredible three and a half thousand entries to the contest, so thanks to everyone who entered. I’ve drawn an additional ten names which I’m keeping to myself at the moment. I have another project in the early planning stages which involves a serial killer and a large number of victims. I’ll be getting in touch with those ten folks at some point in the future to see if they want to play dead in another new book…

Thanks, everyone, for your tremendous support with this contest. Right – back to writing the books!

Exclusive competition – one day left to enter

You’ve got just over twenty-four hours left to enter the SPACES BETWEEN competition. Remind yourself of all the details by clicking this link.

Just to recap, if you want a chance of having a character in a forthcoming novel named after you, all you have to do is:

There have been a huge number of entries so far (almost 2,500 amazingly). The competition closes after midnight UK time on 31st July, and the winners’ names will be announced shortly thereafter. Good luck!

Oh, and I said there would be one main winner (who appears in all four books in THE SPACES BETWEEN series) and four runners up, but it transpires there may be even more of you being immortalised in print in the near future. Watch this space…!

The Spaces Between competition

I know things have been quiet around here for a while… all that will be changing shortly (promise). In the meantime, a quick reminder that you’ve now got just two weeks left to enter my competition to appear as a character in THE SPACES BETWEEN. Follow me on social media, sign up for the monthly newsletter, write a review, buy a signed book… there are loads of ways to enter, and entries (of which there have already been almost 2000) close at midnight on 31st July. Visit this page for all the details.

Infected Bookstore closing Tuesday at midnight!

One final post to advise that the Infected Bookstore will close its virtual doors tomorrow at around midnight UK time. Head over there now for one last look around…

US HATER hardcover bundle (1 available)

And just to confirm, signed books will still be available from Amazon and eBay (and eventually from this site too). This is a ‘repositioning’ (to use a horrible corporate term). Infected Books is a publisher first and foremost, not a book shop!

Remember also, every signed book bought gets you ten entries in the exclusive THE SPACES BETWEEN competition.

Please click here to see what’s still available.

Want to be a character in The Spaces Between?

TSB logoIn the past I’ve held several competitions where folks could win the chance to appear in forthcoming novels. Most notably, Keiran Cope won a charity auction to be in the final AUTUMN novel and have his own AUTUMN short story (which you can read here). And way, way back in 2008, The Swimmer was based on a lovely lady called Joanna Milne who won a contest to become a featured zombie in AUTUMN: DISINTEGRATION. Just below you can see Keiran in character (as immortalized by the mighty Craig Paton) and, next to him, The Swimmer (as sculpted by the equally mighty Patrick Crilley).

I think another contest is long overdue.

As you know I’m in the middle of writing the first part of a new four book horror/science-fiction series, THE SPACES BETWEEN. I’m offering FIVE people the chance to appear as characters in the books.

One randomly selected winner will:

  • Have a key character who appears in all four novels in the series named after them.
  • They’ll also receive a framed illustration of themselves depicted in a key scene from the first book.
  • And they’ll also get signed first editions of each book in the series as and when they’re released.

Four randomly selected runners-up will:

  • Have a supporting character named after them in one of the books (one book per winner).
  • They’ll also received signed first editions of each book in the series as and when they’re released.

So what do you have to do? It’s very simple. Visit this page where you’ll find all the necessary information. Good luck!
