This week is READ AN EBOOK WEEK – a long-standing initiative that I’ve been pleased to support for a number of years. The debate over the merits of print books versus ebooks versus audiobooks will never be settled – I believe each format has its plusses and minuses, and what suits one reader (or listener) might not suit the next. I just try and make my books available in as many formats as I can, and I also try not to exploit my readers by asking them to buy the same book many times over. Never forget – if you buy a signed copy of a title published by Infected Books from www.infectedbooks.co.uk, you’ll immediately be able to download a complementary ebook version. Similarly, buy a print Infected Books title from Amazon, and you can claim a Kindle copy through the Kindle Matchbook programme.
My career was built on a foundation of ebooks. If I hadn’t been able to give so many copies of AUTUMN away (somewhere in the region of half a million by the time the free download disappeared in 2008), then I doubt anyone would have ever heard of me. So please, download and read an ebook this week. And when you’re done, please review and share. Recommendations are invaluable for authors and are always appreciated.
Moody’s suspenseful second Final War horror novel (after One of Us Will Be Dead by Morning), continuing the second series set in the bleak and anger-filled Hater world, is a gripping take on the zombie apocalypse. Many humans have inexplicably turned into Haters, creatures fueled by an unrelenting need to kill. Matthew Dunne has been away from home for three months, battling Haters to get back to his unnamed British city. His girlfriend is understandably surprised when he shows up at the door to their house, and as he learns the new rules of his tightly controlled city, the safer and happier life he had hoped for falls apart. Matt is a typical action hero, trying to protect his woman and prove he is smarter than everyone around him. As more information about the Haters is revealed, Matt’s need to learn more drives the plot forward. Some scenes feel rushed, especially after long sections of Matt surviving by waiting and staying still. Fans of zombie thrillers will not be disappointed.
It’s the 9th annual READ AN EBOOK WEEK. It’s an event I’ve posted about numerous times before and I’m pleased to continue to support the initiative. I’ve been an advocate of ebooks right from the beginning – those pre-Kindle days where I’d email Word, pdf, Mobipocket or lit (remember Microsoft Reader?) copies of AUTUMN to anyone who showed interest. It worked a treat, with more than half a million free copies of AUTUMN being downloaded between 2001 and 2008 when the series was acquired by Thomas Dunne Books.
Ebooks haven’t proved to be the print killer that everyone initially feared. To me, they’re something that compliments but doesn’t replace the physical version. I travel a lot at the moment, and my trusty Kindle has been a godsend on many recent plane and train trips.
So please join me in celebrating the humble ebook by sharing this post and other READ AN EBOOK WEEK articles. To mark the occasion, I’ve got a number of titles on special offer:
Man, I hate the Beatles (sorry, folks), but that seemed like an appropriate title for this post because, on 26 September, it will be exactly twenty years since the first version of my first novel, STRAIGHT TO YOU, was released. My dislike of the original and my love of the rewritten version has been well documented, but I thought I shouldn’t let the twentieth anniversary of the book pass unmarked.
Why Wattpad? Quite simply, because I love it. It’s a great platform that’s growing with real speed in terms of audience and impact (you might remember the 5th Wave story I wrote for them last year). You can still read TRUST on the site – more than 200,000 people have already done so!
Enjoy STRAIGHT TO YOU. It’s a book I’m (finally after twenty years) insanely proud of.
I’ve been really pleased with how well the Voodoo Press German edition of TRUST has been received, and today the book hit a new milestone. We’re number one! Congratulations to Michael Preissl and his team. I’m looking to the Voodoo Press releases of THE COST OF LIVING, ISOLATION and STRAIGHT TO YOU coming soon.
The German language edition of TRUST is released today by Voodoo Press. TRUST is a book I’m very proud of. It’s different from most of my other stuff, and it was the first of my pre-HATER Infected Books novels to be rewritten and re-released. There’s been movie interest in the novel from time to time and I think of all my books not under option, it’s the story I’d most like to see on screen. It deliberately goes against all the typical alien contact cliches, and I think original cover artist CRAIG PATON said it best when he called TRUST an anti-science-fiction novel.

There’s a huge amount going on behind the scenes at Infected Books – lots of new projects being planned and opportunities being explored. I’ve said before, one of the keys aims of IB is to redress the business balance: being an author first and foremost, it’s important to me that the people who create books and films a). retain a high degree of control over their creative work and b). fairly share the benefit of the value of those creations. We’re working hard right now to explore new partnerships and outlets to make that happen, and I’m pleased to be able to announce one of those deals today.
We’ve reached agreement with Michael Preissl, owner of Voodoo Press, for him to represent foreign language rights for Infected Books titles. You might already have seen the covers of the German-language editions of TRUST and GIRL IN THE BASEMENT. This is just the beginning!
I think this is a tremendously exciting development, and I’m looking forward to working closely with Michael as we spread the infection across the rest of the world.
The first releases as part of the Voodoo Press partnership with Infected Books will soon be hitting the shelves. Today I’m very excited to be able to share with you the cover art for the German language edition of TRUST, due out later in 2015. More news coming soon. You can learn more about TRUST by visiting www.trustdavidmoody.com.
My most recent novel, STRANGERS, came out at the end of 2014, and with everything that’s been going on since then, I’ve been guilty of not shouting about it enough. The book got some great press and I’m very proud of it. This is Horror were kind enough to say “Strangers is easily Moody’s best work to date, a dark, disturbing and visceral book that gives him a legitimate claim to the title of Britain’s Best Living Horror Author that was left vacant by James Herbert’s untimely death.” DLS reviews said “I can’t stress enough how utterly captivating Strangers is. It’s addictive reading from start to finish. And it proves once and for all that there’s a hell of a lot more to Moody than the end of the world. 10/10.”
Can I tempt you if you haven’t yet read the book? Do you need more convincing? If so, check out the widget below. A large chunk of the novel has been added to WATTPAD, along with a number of other bits and bobs, including the whole of TRUST available for free.
