I was recently asked to put together some words about Hater and the events which have taken it from self-published novel to its impending ‘mainstream’ publication and movie adaptation. Click here to read the feature at the ‘Waterstone’s Book Quarterly’ website.
The release of HATER is fast approaching. A major publicity offensive is about to start and I’ll be posting more details about that very soon. In the meantime, the book has continued to generate some great press. Over in the US, Booklist gave HATER a starred review:
One day Danny McCoyne’s life tends toward the humdrum: job, family, the usual. The next day, suddenly, without warning or explanation, people are turning into killers, murdering their loved ones, attacking perfect strangers. Soon Danny is trying desperately to keep his family safe, while all around him society seems to be self-destructing, as ordinary men and women turn into animals, filled with hate and violence. This is a truly frightening book because, like Danny, we’re constantly scrambling to process what’s going on. Moody, who self-published the novel in 2006, writes as though his novel were a zombie movie, and readers familiar with the genre will have no difficulty seeing, in their mind’s eye, the rapid dissolution of society played out in front of them. (Is it purely a coincidence that the protagonist has the same first name as Danny Boyle, director of the movie 28 Days Later, whose zombielike creatures were infected with something that filled them with uncontrollable rage?) It’s a risky undertaking, giving literary form to a type of story that is traditionally told in pictures, but Moody completely pulls it off. The movie rights to the book have been sold, and it’ll be interesting to see if the film is as good as the novel. It’s hard to imagine how it could be. (David Pitt – Booklist: December 15, 2008)
Here in the UK, The Bookseller listed HATER as one of their ‘insider tips for the top paperbacks of 2009’!:
To call it a page turner is understating the pace and skill the author brings to this haunting and thought-provoking masterpiece of dark and bloodthirsty fiction. The descriptions of the emotional strain and fear of the characters is gripping, and the tension is palpable, leading to an unnerving and shocking climax. If you are a fan of I Am Legend, George Romero’s Dead series, or any post-apocalyptic fiction, then this is a new and original approach to the genre that you will love from the very start. But be warned, this book is not for the faint-hearted.
And finally, Mathew Riley at www.bookgeeks.co.uk has just posted an incredibly positive and well-considered review here.
…and this is a great one! A ‘starred’ review no less!
Just over 2 months until HATER is released and the first reviews have started to appear. Here are links to a couple of recent ones…
I’ve also added two feeds to the bottom of the side-bar to your right which will be updated as I do more interview and get more reviews!
If you’ve already read HATER, you might remember the first scene which involves a very nasty attack by a character called Simmons. What you probably don’t know is that the attacker was named after Wayne Simmons, a long-time friend and supporter of my writing.
Wayne has just had his first novel released by Permuted Press, and I thought it was only right to make a bit of noise about it. Not only because he’s been shouting about my books for years, but also because DROP DEAD GORGEOUS is a damn good read. Here’s the publisher’s blurb to get you in the mood…
As tattoo artist Star begins to ink her first client on a spring Sunday morning, something goes horribly wrong with the world… Belfast’s hungover lapse into a deeper sleep than normal, their sudden deaths causing an unholy mess of crashing cars, smoldering televisions and falling aircraft. In the chaotic aftermath a group of post-apocalyptic survivors search for purpose in a devastated city. Ageing DJ Sean Magee and shifty-eyed Barry Rogan find drunken solace in a hotel bar. Ex-IRA operative Mairead Burns and RIR soldier Roy Beggs form an uneasy alliance to rebuild community life. Elsewhere, a mysterious Preacher Man lures shivering survivors out of the shadows with a promise of redemption. Choked by the smell of death, Ireland’s remaining few begin the journey toward a new life, fear and desperation giving rise to new tensions and dark old habits. But a new threat–as gorgeous as it is deadly–creeps slowly out of life’s wreckage. Fueled by feral hunger and a thirst for chaos, the corpses of the beautiful are rising…
Since I closed down Infected Books and sold my novels to other publishers, strange things have been happening with the price of the original Infected Books editions. HATER, in particular, has been on sale for stupid amounts of cash since the movie was announced. There were copies listed on Amazon a couple of weeks ago for almost $1000!
I just wanted to say a couple of things. Firstly, HATER and its two sequels and the five AUTUMN books will be published gradually over the next few years. I’m also working on plans for TRUST and STRAIGHT TO YOU. Please don’t pay the kind of prices that some people are asking on the web unless a). you’re too damn rich for your own good or b). you’re a collector and you’re desperate to get your hands on first edition copies.
Secondly, beware some of the listings on Amazon and similar websites. Infected Books used Print on Demand technology and it seems that many of the sellers listed on these sites are third parties or affiliated companies who have access to the printer’s digital catalogue. Unfortunately, these listings are out of date and it is physically impossible for any new orders made for Infected Books titles to be fulfilled.
I just don’t want anyone getting ripped off. I’d rather people waited a little longer to read the books than lost out.
Welcome back to www.djmoody.co.uk! I’ve been off-line for several months and it’s good to be back. Hopefully this new blog/website will mean I’m able to post more news with more speed and get your feedback just as quickly! The old version of the site was pretty inflexible and was becoming too cumbersome (both to maintain and to use). This is all new to me, so please let me know if you come across any problems…
Lots has happened in the last 12 months, most of which has already been documented in one way or another. But by means of a quick catch-up…
- HATER is being re-published in 2009. The UK and US editions will be released in February with Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Romania, Spain, Brazil, Russia and Poland to follow in the coming months.
- The AUTUMN series will also be republished shortly. More details will be posted here as soon as they’re available.
- INFECTED BOOKS is no more. I’ve closed down the business in order to concentrate on writing.
- The HATER movie is in pre-production. The film is being directed by Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage) and produced by Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy I & II, Pan’s Labyrinth, The Hobbit) and Mark Johnson (The Chronicles of Narnia movies).
- The AUTUMN movie (starring Dexter Fletcher and David Carradine) has been completed and has a distributor. Click here for the trailer. More information will be available soon when the AUTUMN website is relaunched.
